Registration number of the company

Most business partners and other interested persons identify a particular company by its most prominent and specific feature which is the name. However, it is noteworthy that the primary identifier of the company is the registration number. Whilst the name of the same company may change several times during the period of its existence, the registration number will remain the same as originally assigned to the given company at the time of its incorporation.

In most jurisdictions the registration number appears in the registration certificate of the company. Simultaneously, different jurisdictions have entirely different numbering principles. As an example, in some countries all types of companies may be subject to common numbering in the same order. On the other hand, as an example, the United Kingdom registration number indicates the type of the company that it may be. The composition of the registration number of an English limited liability partnership is entirely different to that of an ordinary English limited company.

The registration number is also important because most banks require this number to be specified in the documents for account opening. Consequently, situations arise where a properly registered company is unable to open a bank account immediately due to the country of its incorporation assigning a registration number to the company, but only keeping it in its database without stating this number in the corporate documents of the company. In such cases, the only solution is to request from the country of incorporation a special certificate confirming the relevant company's registration number.
